How to read this. We compare every dealer on one consistent basis: the price each one advertises for the size and tax route you picked, with VAT and delivery added. Dealers also discount for buying more, and those quantity prices are not reflected here, so your final basket may differ. A few dealers block automated price checks, so their figure is the last one we read rather than today’s: every row shows the date, and anything we cannot recheck within a week drops off the table entirely. Our ranking is guidance on who looks best value today, not a recommendation. Always check the price on the dealer’s own site before you buy. How we work this out.

Physical bullion only. Unregulated. The value of silver can go down as well as up.

Buying silver, minus the maze

Three steps. No spreadsheets, no sales calls.

1

Choose your VAT route

New silver carries 20% VAT. Pre-owned margin-scheme silver is genuinely cheaper and still delivered to your door. Vaulted silver is VAT-free only while it stays in the vault. Read our VAT guide.

2

See the real price

We add VAT, the dealer’s cut and every delivery charge we can read from the dealer’s own site. Where a dealer only sets delivery at checkout we mark the row + delivery rather than pretend it is free.

Cheapest per ounce is Hatton Garden Metals at £60.84/oz. That is not always the best buy: a CGT-free coin can be worth more than a small price edge, and pre-owned or vaulted silver may cost less again. How we work these out.

Every cost, in plain English

The things dealers don’t always put on the sticker.

VAT (20%)

The big one, and the reason silver is not gold. New silver carries 20% VAT on top. Pre-owned margin-scheme silver charges VAT only on the dealer’s margin, so it is genuinely cheaper. Vaulted silver defers the VAT until you take delivery.

The dealer’s cut

Every dealer adds a markup on top of the silver price. After VAT it is the biggest cost and the main thing we compare, a smaller cut means more silver for your money.

Delivery

Most dealers deliver free and fully insured. A few charge a small fee, and we include it in the price where they do.

Paying by card

Good news: UK dealers can’t add a surcharge for paying by a personal debit or credit card (banned since 2018), so card and bank transfer usually cost the same. A few give a small discount for bank transfer on large orders.

Storage

Only if you choose to store your silver with the dealer instead of having it delivered. A yearly fee, shown separately. Note that vaulted VAT-free silver is storage by definition, and taking it home later adds 20% VAT.

Buy-back price

What the dealer pays if you sell it back. The gap below the market price is your real cost for a round trip.

Minimum order

Most have none, but some only give free delivery or storage above a set amount.

Silver buying questions, answered

How do I find the cheapest place to buy silver in the UK?

Enter your budget in the comparison tool above and we rank UK dealers by the real all-in cost of silver, including VAT, the dealer's cut and delivery, so you can see which one gives you the most actual silver for your money. Pick your VAT route first, because a new VAT-paid price and a vaulted VAT-free price are not comparable.

Do you pay VAT on silver in the UK?

Yes. Unlike investment gold, silver is not VAT exempt. New silver carries 20% VAT on top of the price. There are two lower-VAT routes: pre-owned silver sold under the VAT margin scheme, where the dealer pays VAT only on their own margin, and vaulted silver held in bonded storage, which is VAT-free only for as long as it stays in the vault.

Is VAT-free silver really cheaper?

It depends which kind. Pre-owned margin-scheme silver is genuinely cheaper, delivered to your door, and the lower price is the final price. Vaulted VAT-free silver only looks cheaper: the moment you take delivery, 20% VAT becomes due on the value at that date. Our VAT guide explains the difference.

Is it cheaper to buy 1oz silver or a 1kg bar?

A 1kg bar almost always carries a lower premium per ounce than 1oz coins or bars, so for the same spend you end up with more silver. The catch is the ticket price: you need enough budget to afford a whole bar. Our tool ranks small budgets on 1oz and larger budgets on 1kg, and tells you when crossing over would get you more metal.

What is the premium, or dealer's cut, on silver?

It is the amount a dealer charges above the raw silver price, covering refining, minting and their margin. Silver premiums are proportionally much larger than gold's because the fabrication cost is similar but the metal underneath is worth far less. A smaller cut means more silver for your money.

Do you pay Capital Gains Tax on silver?

You may owe CGT on any profit when you sell, but UK legal-tender coins such as the Silver Britannia are exempt from CGT entirely. Foreign silver coins and silver bars are not. VAT applies either way. This is information, not tax advice.

Are the prices you show actually in stock?

Yes. We rank the cheapest item each dealer genuinely has in stock and ready to buy. We deliberately skip out-of-stock and sold-out “from” prices that look cheap but cannot actually be purchased, so the price you see is a real one you can act on.

Is buying physical silver safe and regulated?

Physical bullion is unregulated: it sits outside the Financial Conduct Authority and is not covered by the FSCS or the Financial Ombudsman Service. That does not make it unsafe, but it means buying from established, reputable dealers matters. We only rank dealers whose live prices we can verify.
